Assistive Technology

Accessibility & Disability Services (ADS) offers a range of assistive technologies as accommodations for Towson University students with documented disabilities. These tools are available to students who have registered with ADS and provided appropriate documentation.

Assistive Technology for ADS Students

  • Kurzweil 3000 - Reading comprehension software that scans printed text, then reads the contents of the printed document aloud. It also reads aloud words typed on the screen.
  • NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) - Open-source screen reading software that uses speech synthesis to read the contents of the display window.
  • Genio Notes - Notetaking and audio-recording software that captures lecture material, organize content, identify important points, and study efficiently.
  • Spell Checkers - Software tool that identifies and suggests corrections for mispelled words, grammar, and punctuation. 
  • Dictation - Speech recognition software that allows users to dictate documents into their processor.
  • Livescribe Smart Pen - Records audio while linking to written notes.
  • Onyx Deskset Portable Video Magnifier - Portable magnification for printed materials that uses a camera and monitor to display materials.
  • Digital Recorders - A physical device used to record lecture audio for notetaking support. 
  • FM System - An assistive listening device that consists of a transmitter with a microphone, worn by the speaker, and a receiver worn by the listener. 

Assistive Technologies at Cook Library

There are two computer stations located in Cook Library, on the main floor (3rd), with the following set-up:

  • One height-adjustable desk
  • One magnifiable CCTV
  • NVDA (on both computers)
  • Fusion (JAWS and ZoomText, on one computer)
  • Morphic (available on all Cook Library computers)

  • Acrobat HD CCTV Magnifier - Stationary high definition magnification for printed materials.
  • Talking Calculators - Calculator with a built-in speech synthesizer that reads aloud the numbers, symbols, and calculation results as they are entered and displayed.
